THE FIELD GUIDE / FIXTURE INSTALLATION

A Bathroom Fixture Upgrade Checklist

Questions to settle before changing bathroom faucets, showerheads, or sink fixtures.

A bathroom upgrade is most successful when the new parts fit the room and the existing plumbing. A compact checklist can catch awkward clearances, worn valves, and product gaps before installation day.

FIELD NOTE

Start With How The Room Is Used

List the fixtures being changed and any current frustrations: splashing at the basin, a hard-to-turn handle, a dripping showerhead, or too little room for cleaning. Decide which features are essential and which are only preferences. For a shared bathroom, consider how adults, children, and visitors will operate the controls. This helps focus the purchase on daily function as well as appearance.

FIELD NOTE

Check Fit And Compatibility

Measure hole spacing, faucet reach, and the space behind each handle. For a shower fixture, identify whether you are changing only the visible showerhead or planning work on the control valve behind the wall. Those are different scopes. Photograph model labels or visible trim when available. A new finish or handle set is not always compatible with an older in-wall valve.

FIELD NOTE

Look At The Supporting Plumbing

Inspect accessible cabinet areas for dampness and note any shutoff valve that is difficult to operate. Mention slow drainage or a leak at the existing fixture before the appointment. A new faucet will not correct a blocked drain or a failed wall connection. Ask the installer to explain any needed supply, drain, or valve changes before work starts so the scope stays clear.

FIELD NOTE

Test And Document The Result

After installation, use each control and watch where water lands. Confirm hot and cold operation, drainage, and the absence of visible drips at accessible joints. For water-saving products, look for a WaterSense label when applicable and keep the product instructions. Take note of the model number and the location of the shutoff. These small records make later maintenance much easier. If a product has a removable aerator or other service part, ask how to identify the correct replacement.
