Signs That May Point To A Water-Main Leak

A wet yard or weak flow may have several causes. Here are clues to check before digging.

A buried supply line can leak without a visible spray. Damp ground, a change in household flow, or unexpected water use may be the first clue. Each symptom has other possible causes, so the goal is to collect observations and arrange a sound diagnosis before any digging is planned.

FIELD NOTE

Look At The Pattern Outdoors

A persistently wet patch when surrounding soil is dry can be relevant, especially if it lies near the known supply route. Note whether irrigation, recent rain, drainage from a neighbor, or an outdoor hose could explain it. Do not probe the ground or excavate around a suspected utility line.

Photograph visible pooling from a safe position and note whether it changes when sprinklers are off. Water at the surface may have traveled from another location underground, so the wettest spot is not necessarily the break.

FIELD NOTE

Compare Use And Flow

An unexplained rise in water use can signal a leak, but a running toilet or irrigation fault may be responsible. EPA WaterSense recommends checking a water meter during a period when no water is being used and comparing the reading later. If it changes, investigate rather than assuming the buried main is at fault.

Low flow throughout the building matters more for a supply-route concern than a single weak faucet. Ask whether neighbors also have low water; a utility issue may affect more than one property.

FIELD NOTE

Act On An Active Problem

If water is spreading toward the building, call promptly. If you know the safe location of your main shutoff, closing it may limit damage, but do not enter a flooded or electrically hazardous area to reach a valve. Tell the plumber what changed and when.

A professional can compare meter activity, visible fixtures, irrigation, and the supply route. These observations help decide whether the problem is on the water main or elsewhere before discussing repair.
