THE FIELD GUIDE / WATER HEATERS

No Hot Water? What To Note Before Calling

A safe observation checklist for a tank water heater that has stopped supplying hot water.

A cold tap can reflect a problem at one fixture, throughout the house, or at the heater. A few observations help a plumber narrow the possibilities without asking you to open a panel or touch gas or electrical components.

FIELD NOTE

Check The Pattern At The Taps

Try a second hot-water fixture and note whether both are cold, lukewarm, or alternating. If only one faucet or shower is affected, the fixture or its mixing valve may be involved. If every hot tap is affected, the heater or shared piping deserves attention. Note when the change began and whether it followed an outage, recent plumbing work, or unusually heavy hot-water use.

A storage tank can temporarily run short during a busy period, then recover. That differs from water that never warms. Record how long the problem lasts rather than repeatedly running taps to test it.

FIELD NOTE

Look Without Dismantling Anything

From a safe distance, look for visible water around the heater, its nearby connections, or the floor. Note any display message and photograph it if the screen is easy to see. Also record the model and serial number from an accessible label. Avoid removing covers, resetting a tripped breaker repeatedly, or relighting or adjusting gas equipment yourself.

If you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. If water is near electrical equipment, stay clear and seek professional help. These conditions take priority over troubleshooting.

FIELD NOTE

Give The Plumber A Useful Report

Tell the plumber which fixtures are affected, the water temperature pattern, any unusual sound or visible leak, and the age of the heater if known. Photos of the unit and its installation space can help with preparation, though an onsite inspection is still needed to identify the failure.

Ask what was found, whether the affected part can be repaired, and what would change the recommendation to replacement. Cold water alone does not prove the tank has failed. An assessment of the unit and its connections is what separates a repairable fault from a larger problem.
