THE FIELD GUIDE / TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

Plan A Conversion From A Tank To Tankless

Ask about capacity, connections, and installation work before switching to tankless.

A tankless conversion changes how hot water is produced, and may change the utility connections and installation layout. It is worth understanding the entire project before choosing a unit from a brochure.

FIELD NOTE

Begin With The Reason For Switching

Are you trying to free floor space, improve efficiency, or support longer consecutive hot-water use? Tell the installer what the existing tank does poorly and what you expect from a new system. Tankless equipment heats water as it flows and has a maximum rated flow; it does not promise unlimited simultaneous delivery. That distinction matters for households that run several fixtures at once.

Compare the expected use pattern with an appropriately sized storage replacement as well. Ask for the assumptions behind any operating-cost comparison, including energy prices and household water use.

FIELD NOTE

Walk Through Site Requirements

A qualified installer should assess fuel or electrical supply, venting for combustion models, water piping, mounting location, clearances, drainage where needed, and access for future service. Existing connections may not support the selected equipment without modification. The exact work depends on the model and the home.

Ask where the new unit will be mounted, what happens to the old tank and its connections, and which walls or finishes need access. If the quote is remote, treat it as preliminary until the installer verifies site conditions.

FIELD NOTE

Compare Complete Written Scopes

A useful estimate identifies the model, its capacity at the assumed temperature rise, connection changes, venting or power work, permit responsibilities, startup testing, and removal of the old heater. Ask who performs work outside plumbing if the project calls for it. A clear scope reduces surprises when installation begins.

Also ask about model-specific service requirements and the location of service access. Keep the final manual, warranty information, and installed model details. The best conversion is one that fits both daily demand and the space needed to maintain it.
